South African Mathematics Foundation – SAMO – S A Maths Olympiad – The South African Mathematics Olympiad is the biggest Olympiad in the country. Almost 100 000 learners participated in the 2017 Olympiad. 

  • Senior Olympiad (Gr 8 to 12)
    • Closing date for entries: Friday, 1 February 2019
    • 1st Round: Tuesday, 12 March 2019
    • 2nd Round: Wednesday, 15 May 2019
    • Final Round: Thursday, 25 July 2019
    • Cost R25 per student for email entries.

  

National and Natural Science Olympiads – The aim of the Natural Science Olympiad is to identify and nurture talent in Natural Science, Life Science and Accounting; to increase the number of learners who opt for Physical Science, Life Science, Accounting and Mathematics at high schools; and to act as a feeder for SAASTA’s National Science Olympiad for grades 10 – 12, which is now in its 53rd year.

  • The entry fee for both the National and Natural Science Olympiads is R35.00 per learner per paper.
  • Learners can enrol for either Physical Sciences or Life Sciences or both subjects
  • The closing date for the entries is 8 February 2019.
  • The examination date will be:
    Wednesday, 15 May 2019 for the Physical Sciences Paper (grades 10-12) and
    Thursday, 16 May 2019 for Natural Sciences (grades 4-6, 7-9) and Life Sciences (grade 10-12)
  • All papers are available in both English and Afrikaans

World Maths Day  – 6 March 2019 – The World Education Games team returns in 2019 with an event shining a spotlight purely on mathematics… World Maths Day!

Computer Olympiad – This contest requires the use of Computational Thinking – those skills that are also required for Mathematics, Science, IT and Computer Applications.
Homeschoolers will be able to take part for the first time in 2019 through the Science Centre.

Horizon Maths Competition – Maths – Horizon Educational Trust holds an annual mathematics competition. Grade 5 to 7 are invited. One of the Homeschool moms normally organises this – keep a look out on Homeschool Western Cape Facebook page as well.

  • 1st Round: Wednesday, 6 March 2019
  • 2nd (final) Round: 11 May 2019.
  • Cost normally R20 for the final round

Master Spelling Bee – All school children from grade 4 -12 are eligible to participate. Although the child must be registered at any school in the Republic of South Africa they do not have to register as part of a school group. Registration can be done individually without the assistance of the school.

GENIUS Olympiad 2018/2019 – GENIUS Olympiad is an international high school project competition about environmental issues. It is founded and organized by the Terra Science and Education and hosted by the State University of New York at Oswego. GENIUS Olympiad will host projects in five general disciplines with an environmental focus. (South Africa: Eskom Expo for Young Scientists & Imbewu Science Foundation)

  • The Project Application will start on December 15, 2018. The link will be available on this website, all applications are made online.
  • The Project Application Deadline is March 1, 2019, for all individual/school applications.
  • The Application deadline for Affiliated International Fairs is March 15, 2019.
  • The Application deadline for Affiliated National (U.S. and Canadian Only) Fairs is April 15, 2019.
  • Project Finalists will be announced on our website on March 26, 2019.
  • Participation Registration Deadline is May 1, 2019 to be eligible to participate in.

World Knowledge Olympiad – General Knowledge – The World Knowledge Olympiad is for secondary (gr 8 to 12) and primary schools (gr 6 & 7) in South Africa. The World Knowledge Olympiad is a long-standing national Olympiad for Grade 6 – 12 learners. For almost 30 years, it has attracted bright and curious young minds who are self-starters wanting to know more about the world around them.

SA Writers College Annual Writers Short Story Award – The annual SA Writers College Short Story Competition is held to acknowledge excellence in creative writing in the Short Story form. The competition is open to any writer residing in South Africa who is unpublished or has been published fewer than four times.

DBE Spelling BEE – English – As part of the Read to Lead Campaign, the DBE hosts the DBE Spelling Bee South Africa (National spelling bee championship) annually for Grade 4 to Grade 6 learners. Only DBE registered Homeschoolers are allowed to enter.)

Mzansi Spelling Beeis a national annual Spelling challenge for spellers age 9 – 17 or grades 4 – 11.  Spellers can be from the public, private or home schools.  Spellers can enter the bee as individuals or as part of a group. Be Mzansi’s next spelling champion and represent South Africa at the 2020 Africa Spelling Bee and win prizes worth up to R20 000 in prizes.

The South African National Geography Olympiad (SANGO) – The SANGO is an initiative of the Society of South African Geographers (SSAG), with the
Southern African Geography Teachers’ Association (SAGTA) as implementing partner. All learners aged between 16 and 18 enrolled at a High (Secondary) School in South Africa.

SA Science Lens Competition  (The competition to the public in all age categories)

  • SA Science Lens runs biennially (Last one was 2017) and alternates with the Young Science Communicator’s Competition™. Entries open in September and close in January the following year.

  

De Beers English Olympiad (Has to be entered through a school) The De Beers English Olympiad is an English competition that draws over 8000 entries each year from around South Africa and its neighbouring countries. The competition is organized jointly by the Grahamstown Foundation and the South African Council for English Education. The competition is open to ALL learners who will be in Grades 10, 11 and 12.

Konica Minolta Art Competition – Konica Minolta has been dedicated to innovation since its inception. ‘Giving Shape to Ideas’, the company’s brand proposition, forms the guiding principle behind all of its activities. As a truly innovative and socially responsible company, Konica Minolta is hoping to identify and nurture the talents of the future. Konica Minolta wants to combine innovation with imagination for a brighter tomorrow. This art competition is designed to inspire young talent and give them an opportunity to show their creativity.
