International Mathematics CompetitionFor the 14th consecutive year Elkanah House will be hosting the selection rounds for the prestigious ‘International Mathematics Competition’ (IMC), taking place in Bulgaria this year. For the 2nd year, Elkanah House will also be hosting the selection round and facilitating the team entry, for the science component of the ‘International Mathematics and Science Olympiad’ (IMSO), taking place in China this year. To enter: http://tinyurl.com/ElkanahMaths2018

World Maths Day – The World Education Games team returns in 2018 with an event shining a spotlight purely on mathematics… World Maths Day!

South African Mathematics Foundation – SAMO – S A Maths Olympiad – The South African Mathematics Olympiad is the biggest Olympiad in the country. Almost 100 000 learners participated in the 2017 Olympiad.

    • Closing date for entries: Wednesday, 2 February 2018
    • 1st Round: Wednesday, 14 March 2018
    • 2nd Round: Wednesday, 16 May 2018
    • Final Round: Thursday, 26 July 2018
    • Cost R22 per student for email entries.

 

ATKV Afrikaans Olympiad – Afrikaans – Homeschoolers in the Western Cape can enter under the banner of Cape Home Educators, which is registered as a school with the ATKV. Information on CHE Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/CapeHomeEducators/

Computer Olympiad – This contest requires the use of Computational Thinking – those skills that are also required for Mathematics, Science, IT and Computer Applications. No registration date available – register as soon as possible. It seems it has to be done through a school.

    • 5 to 9 March 2018 (Use any day or days that suit you that week).

 

Horizon Maths Competition – Maths – Horizon Educational Trust holds an annual mathematics competition. Grade 5 to 7 are invited. 

  • 1st Round: Wednesday, 14 March 2018
  • 2nd (final) Round: 12 May 2018.

 

Tygerberg International Eisteddfod

World Knowledge Olympiad – General Knowledge – The World Knowledge Olympiad is for secondary (gr 8 to 12) and primary schools (gr 6 & 7) in South Africa.

South African Mathematics Challenge – AMESA – S A Maths Challenge – Presently over 110 000 learners participate in the Challenge every year. Now homeschool friendly.

  • Senior Olympiad (Gr 4 to 7)
    • Closing date for entries: 26 April 2018
    • 1st Round: 7 to 11 May 2018
    • Final Round: 1 August July 2018
    • Cost R12 per learner.

 

DBE Spelling BEE – English – As part of the Read to Lead Campaign, the DBE hosts the DBE Spelling Bee South Africa (National spelling bee championship) annually for Grade 4 to Grade 6 learners. Only DBE registered Homeschoolers are allowed to enter.)

  • No dates for 2018 as yet. (2017 Wordlist)
  • Entries normally close end of April.

 

Master Spelling Bee – All school children from grade 4 -12 are eligible to participate. Although the child must be registered at any school in the Republic of South Africa they do not have to register as part of a school group. Registration can be done individually without the assistance of the school.

  • Closing date for entries: Friday, 27 April 2018 – Extended to Thursday, 31 May 2018
  • Examination date: Tuesday, 4 September 2018
  • Cost R150 per student

 

Mzansi Spelling Beeis a national annual Spelling challenge for spellers age 9 – 17 or grades 4 – 11.  Spellers can be from public, private or home schools.  Spellers can enter the bee as individuals or as part of a group. Be Mzansi’s next spelling champion and represent South Africa at the 2019 Africa Spelling Bee and win prizes worth up to R20 000 in prizes.

  • Programming Olympiad – Designed for High School learners, but Primary School learners welcome. The Programming Olympiad is a challenge for learners who can use a programming language like Scratch, Python, Java, C++ or Delphi.

    • Final Round: Weekend of 6 and 7 October 2018 in Cape Town

National Science Olympiad (Harmony) – SAATRA – This Olympiad is an examination in Physical and Life Sciences for Grade 10 to 12 learners.

  • Closing date for entries:
    • 29 September 2017 is R15.00
    • 30 November 2017 is R20.00
    • 31 January 2018 is R25.00
  • Examination date: Tuesday, 1 March 2018

 

SA Science Lens Competition  (The competition to the public in all age categories)

  • SA Science Lens runs biennially (Last one was 2017) and alternates with the Young Science Communicator’s Competition™. Entries open in September and close in January the following year.

 

De Beers English Olympiad (Has to be entered through a school) The De Beers English Olympiad is an English competition that draws over 8000 entries each year from around South Africa and its neighbouring countries. The competition is organized jointly by the Grahamstown Foundation and the South African Council for English Education. The competition is open to ALL learners who will be in Grades 10, 11 and 12.

  • Closing date for entries: Early in September about R125 per entry.

First Tech Challenge (FTC)

It’s way more than building robots. FIRST Tech Challenge teams (10+ members, grades 7-12) are challenged to design, build, program, and operate robots to compete in a head-to-head challenge in an alliance format. Participants call it “the hardest fun you’ll ever have!”

  • FIRST Lego League (FLL) age 9-16 Years, 4-0 members per team http://www.fllsa.org/
    – Registration was 3 November 2017. Look out in November 2018 to register in time for 2019 Championship.
